The American Journal of Preventive Medicine says one in five adolescents suffer from "depression."

To which I reply: that's all?

It's rough out there for kids, social media can harm them grievously, and today, every child is locked and loaded with a cell phone.

Childhood has never been gentle; bullies, false friends, competition over appearance, nagging parents.  Don't know about you, but I felt liberated when I got my driver's license at 17.  End of kid status.

Now young people are never liberated. Social media attacks are vicious and often anonymous.  I confronted bullies with my fists.  Today you don't even know who is trying to hurt you in the tweet universe.

So, who's surprised that 20 percent of American kids are depressed?  And, of course, that state of mind can easily lead to substance abuse.

The answer to my question is - no one's surprised.
