The Democratic Party finds itself in a horror movie, a nightmarish tale where they are being devoured by The Orange Monster. That was abundantly clear during Donald Trump’s speech to both chambers of Congress.
It’s often observed that Trump has broken the brains of many Democrats. It now seems like he has also broken their souls and spirits. We don’t mean ‘soul’ in the divine or eschatological sense. It’s the soul of their humanity that’s been stripped away, and that was on full display Tuesday night.
Many Democrats are so infused with Trump hatred that they have lost any capacity to salute the best of humanity if he is involved in any way. You’ve seen the shameful examples of Democrats sitting on their hands, literally and figuratively, when President Trump brought attention to a released hostage, a terrorist’s capture, and, most notably, a 13-year-old boy who has been battling brain cancer.
Democratic Senator John Fetterman, now the party’s voice of reason, described the display as ‘a sad cavalcade of self-owns and unhinged petulance.’ A few other Democrats, most choosing anonymity, also denounced their colleagues’ clownish behavior.
What’s next? Well, the famous 1968 horror movie ‘Night of the Living Dead’ ended very badly for the protagonists. The Democratic Party may have a happier future, but it won’t be easy. They have to finally jettison their left-wing lunatics and rejoin the world of the normal. If the Dems can be re-souled by the midterms, if they focus on issues and not just the bogeyman in the Oval, they can regain the House and fight the monster in a more traditional political way.
One more thing: We admit to having a fantasy in which 13-year-old newly-minted Secret Service agent DJ Daniel pursues Congressman Al Green and puts him in cuffs for threatening President Trump with a cane. No such luck. DJ Daniel is returning home to Texas, where his representative is ... the one and only Al Green. It’s a heavily Democratic district, so let’s hope young DJ doesn’t get booed.
