President Biden is set to meet Pope Francis on Friday, a problematic situation for both men. What should be a nice event starring the two most prominent Catholics in the world, will be subject to very harsh analysis.

The Pope clearly considers abortion murder and the President clearly wants to make the procedure easier. That's a tough detente. And in a few weeks, Joe Biden could be called out by many American bishops who have condemned the President for facilitating what they consider a grave sin.

Francis does not want Mr. Biden to be denied the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist but it could happen. So this is one intense issue.

Many wonder why Pope Francis is giving Mr. Biden a relative pass. I believe it's because Francis does not want to alienate even more people. The Catholic Church remains badly damaged by the awful crimes committed by some clergy. The last thing the Pope needs is more controversy.

But by demanding that Catholics and others of faith actually pay for abortions through tax dollar subsidies to clinics, Joe Biden has put himself in a precarious spiritual place. He didn't have to do that. He chose to do it.

The Pope should choose to condemn that decision directly to the President himself, and to the world. If the Catholic Church truly stands for life, Pope Francis has no other choice.
